What was previously known as the ‘Model of the Year’ awards have this year been promoted on RMweb, through British Railways Modelling Magazine and on the online MREmag.com as the British Model Railway Awards. As part of the evolution the categories were broadened to celebrate excellence and innovation in the wider British model railway scene. New awards now also cover retailers, websites, exhibitions and layouts, acknowledging the huge contributions they make to our hobby.

The winners of the first British Model Railway Awards for 2015 have been announced today and can be read here.

Congratulations to all the winners; and in particular the Kernow Model Rail Centre  for winning the best 00 gauge steam locomotive for their  ex London and South Western Railway Adams O2 class 0-4-4T , Graham Farish for winning the N gauge steam locomotive of the year with their original Bulleid Merchant Navy 4-6-2 and also Dapol for winning the best 0 Gauge steam locomotive with their ex London Brighton and South Coast A1 / A1X Terrier 0-6-0T, therefore ensuring that the Southern Railway is well represented in the awards, which is always good news.

Also well done to the UK Model Shops website for justifiably winning the website of the year award, in which I was surprised and honoured for this humble web blog to have been nominated and came 4th, so many thanks to all who did take the time to vote.

Over the last few years an annual wish list poll has been run as a collaboration between MREmag and  RMweb it is no coincidence that many of the items that have appeared at the top of these polls in past years have subsequently appeared in the main manufactures ranges.

The Wishlist Poll 2014 will run from 1 to 31 October and you can take part here.

The purpose of The Poll is to provide an easy and enjoyable way for modellers and collectors to tell the major manufacturers and commissioners of ready-to-run railway models what they would like to see made from new tooling (excluding models announced, tooled or made since 2000).

There are 21 categories in N and 00 covering: Steam locos of the Big Four and BR; Diesel & Electric Locos; DMUs & EMUs; Coaches; Non-passenger-carrying Coaching Stock; Freight Stock; General Service Stock; and other railway-related items (such as turntables). Two new categories this year cover Standard Gauge Industrial and London Underground.

To act as an aide-memoire, the 9-man Poll Team has again provided The Guide. If you don’t know the build dates of the various BR Mk1 catering vehicles, or whether one particular 0-6-0 steam loco will suit your needs better than others, you will find all the answers there – and many more! This guide can be found here.

If you have any queries, please contact The Poll Team by email here

Go on…vote for anything Southern you know you want to…go on…that’s right Southern…

It’s that time of the year again when MREmag and RMweb run there annual wish list poll as a chance for all of us to vote for the railway models (in N and oo) that we would like to see made.
The poll provides a simple way for modellers and collectors alike to inform the major manufacturers and commissioners of ready-to-run railway models what they would like to see made from new tooling.
Over the last number of years that the poll has being run a number of the top voted items have subsequently been manufactured or announced. So although there is not a guarantee that winning models will be produced it does increase the likelihood, as it is known that manufacturers do take account of the results in when considering their future plans.

This years poll that can be found here via the RMweb forum (you do not have be a member of the forum  to take part in the poll) is running until 28th April 2013.

Whilst of course I am not in a position to influence any voting, the fact that you are reading this might mean that you have a Southern Railway or Southern Region persuasion and therefore voting in the SR categories could benefit us all…  Vote Southern!

It’s that time of the year again when the now annual Model Rail Magazine  / RMweb online forum  / MREmag online independent news service – Railway Model of the Year Award poll has gone live online via RMweb.

Railway modellers, not necessary solely readers or contributors to the listed magazines or forums, are invited to take part. The poll covers  N, 00 and 0 gauges and participants can vote on their favourite models that were released in 2011 along with a vote for overall manufacturer of the year. To register your votes click here.

Since its initial introduction a couple of years ago the poll has become more widely supported and respected by modellers, the model railway media and manufacturers alike.

It should be remembered that only models that were actually introduced during 2011 are eligible to be included, so some models that actually appeared at the very end of 2010 but perhaps were not so widely available until early 2011 do not make the list as they would have been included in last year’s poll.
