This coming weekend, 13/14th February,  I will be assisting fellow High Wycombe and District MRS members Alan and Simon Paley with their delightful Pre-Grouping Midland and London North Western Railway layout Loughborough Road at the Festival of British Model Railways organised by Warners (the publishers of BRM magazine and also owners of RMweb). The show, celebrating its 20th anniversary, is being held at Doncaster Exhibition Centre, The Racecourse, Doncaster, DN2 6BB. Loughborough Road will be joining 30 or other layouts in a variety of scales, gauges and genres.

Alan’s Loughborough Road layout, as I have mentioned on this blog before, is a fictitious location but is based on the premise of the main road running south from Nottingham through West Bridgford to Loughborough. The Midland Railway line linking Kettering/Melton Mowbray/Nottingham runs through West Bridgeford and slightly further East was the London North Western and Great Northern Joint Railway line built to link Market Harborough & Peterborough/Melton Mowbray/Nottingham. There is no evidence that any station was proposed for West Bridgeford but it is not entirely impossible that the good citizens of West Bridgford – in 1900 a thriving and growing suburb – might have ambitiously established a terminus for the Midland Railway with LNWR running powers and all linked into a growing Nottingham suburban railway network.

It is the first outing of the layout in its slightly longer form, Alan has been beavering away replacing the short centre board with a longer one to enable more sweeping trackwork and the addition of a cattle dock to further increase the operational interest.

I always enjoy assisting Alan and Simon operating Loughborough Road, and additional operator ‘Arduino’ Roger, with its pre-grouping splendour. I can usually be found sat out the front happily shunting the yard and trying to keep up with the running sequence; which I assume has had to change slightly due to the extension to the layout and hopefully correcting the few slight anomalies that were in the old sequence to keep me on my toes. I have now just about recovered from three enjoyable consecutive weekends exhibiting Fisherton Sarum twice and, in between, assisting fellow High Wycombe and District MRS member Alan Paley with is exquisite pre-grouping Loughborough Road layout.

Firstly I must extend my thanks once again to my family and members of the aforementioned High Wycombe and District MRS for assiting me with the exhibiting of Fisherton Sarum as without them it would not be possible to exhibit at all!

The first show was the excellent Worthing MRC exhibition which by all accounts was a great success for the Worthing MRC with visitor numbers up on previous years, which is always good to hear, and the fact that they had taken to step to utilise more space within the venue which afforded us plenty of room. As I reported last week it was the first time that we had operated the layout following the relocation of the main control panel from the rear of the layout to the front left hand corner and it certainly, as hoped, made interaction with the audience easier and more pleasant, whilst keeping things in the shed area moving.

As I have said before each show tends to be memorable for one reason or another and this was no exception.  My model of  the Bulleid Leader as usual provoked much interest and discussion and one visitor in particular was notable in being only the second person I have ever spoken to that saw the  actual Leader in operation, as he worked at Brighton Works during its development and initial trials, a hugely interesting conversation indeed!
The failure of the turntable mechanical drive system towards the end of Sunday afternoon was the only negative aspect from the show.

Last weekends visit of Fisherton Sarum to the Great Electric Train Show organised by the Hornby Magazine was another great weekend and once again visitor numbers have steadily increased in the three years the show has been run. This is I am certain due to the number of quality exhibits and traders on show, if you have not managed to get along to this show I can very much recommend it.

Being located pretty near to the main entrance meant we were crowded around the layout within literally seconds of the show opening. In places throughout the venue the aisles were a little narrow and I was pleased that I had been able to set the layout back from its intended location to widen the aisle by a few feet. The crowds remained for most of the weekend with only a slight thinning of onlookers very late on in the afternoons.
The Friday evening set was a bit fraught due to finding out the turntable fix deployed after Worthing had not gone totally to plan and some glue seepage had occurred locking everything up. However after some hope and brute force being applied and careful reapplication of glue, followed by waiting overnight and reprogramming the indexing on the Saturday morning all appeared to work well for the rest of the weekend, phew!

The Sunday saw as promised a guest engine make an appearance, in the form of the Bachmann N Class No.1848 that I repainted and numbered into post war SR black livery for friend and fellow post war period modeller Robin Sweet (Gwrrob on RMweb) as can be seen from the picture she looked quite at home on shed,  No. 1848 having been a Salisbury allocated engine.

I did have a slight issue with one of the fiddle yard cassettes on the Sunday morning where the screws holding down the aluminum angle had come loose causing a few derailments on the exit to the fiddle, but once the cause was found it was duly fixed and more reliable operation continued for the rest of the day, I apologise if you were watching during this period of time (and also possibly to my operators at the time whom were initially getting the blame!). The use of cassettes in the fiddle yard is always a talking point at shows and will be the subject of a future post.

Three shows in three weekends whilst fun was a bit tiring and I might have to think hard about repeating such in the future. It is always a pleasure to meet and chat to readers of my little corner of the blogosphere at shows and I thank you for taking an interest and also your kind comments about this blog and Fiosherton Sarum itself.

The observant among you will notice that I currently have no confirmed future bookings for Fisherton Sarum, but have no fear I am in discussion with a number of show organisers for appearances of Fisherton Sarum in 2016 and beyond so watch this space!

It has been a while since Fisherton Sarum last made an appearance at an exhibition, back in March at the London Festival of Railway Modelling in fact. With the Summer (if it can be called a summer this year) now over the exhibition circuit is back in full swing and sees Fisherton Sarum at two shows in three weeks. It also sees the first time that we will have operated the layout at a show with the Control Panel located at the front corner of the layout, that should make interaction with the audience easier, although possibly more distracting from a operating perspective, but should be fun.

The first show is this coming weekend 26th / 27th September  and is the Worthing MRC annual exhibition being held at the Durrington High School, Worthing, BN13 1LA It is always nice to be exhibition back in the heart Southern Railway territory, even if it is more the,  ex London Brighton and South Coast, Central section than the, ex London and South Western, Western Section upon which Fisherton Sarum is based, but hey Southern is Southern right? It is also a pleasure to be attending this show as the Worthing MRC club president, Dave Kent, is a friend and past member of the High Wycombe & District MRS

The second outing is two weeks later 10th / 11th October 2015 at the Great Electric Train Show organised by the Hornby Magazine at the Heritage Motor Centre, Gaydon  This is the third year that Hornby Magazine have organised this show which already has a reputation for being a quality show with a great line line up of layouts and traders, with the added bonus of visitors also being able to wonder around the Heritage Motor museum as well.

Just to add to the buses analogy of three coming along at once, I am also at The Folkestone, Hythe & District MRC exhibition in between the two shows above on the 3rd /4th October assisting fellow High Wycombe and District MRS members Alan and Simon Paley with their delightful Pre-Grouping Midland and London North Western Railway layout Loughborough Road.

Alan and Simon will also be assisting me with Fisherton Sarum’s two appearances so it is a pleasure to be able to return the favour.

Keeping with the local exhibition Fisherton Sarum will be making is closest exhibition appearance to home next Saturday 21st February at the Princes Risborough and District Model Railway Club’s Risex show. It is being held at the Community Centre, Wades Field, Stratton Road, Princes Risborough, Bucks, HP27 9AX (I could probably hit the Community Centre with a lump of steam coal thrown from my house higher up on the Chiltern Hills escarpment, that’s how local it is!). The show is open between 10 am and 5 pm and whilst a smallish show it showcases a number of local layouts and is well worth a visit, so come along if you can and say hello.

Last weekend I had the privilege to be assisting fellow High Wycombe and District MRS members Alan and Simon Paley with their delightful Pre-Grouping layout Loughborough Road (on which most of the pictures  below were taken) at the excellent RMweb live event in Coventry.  It was also a chance to catch up with a number of the manufacturers and see their progress on some Southern related models.

Firstly further progress is being made with the Kernow Model Centre’s ex LSWR Adams O2 locomotives and I am pleased to advise the second engineering prototypes (EP’s) have now been received. Unlike the first EP’s received that were a bit of a mix of some of the tooling options these samples combine the all the correct tooling options for the each of the seven variants being produced.

Also a couple of issues highlighted from the first EP’s have also been corrected. Now that these models are being project managed by Dave Jones of DJ Models the development has moved on a pace and the livery details can now be completed. As I reported here the Kernow Models Gate Stock sets also being managed by DJ Models have recently been signed off for tooling to commence.

Hornby were represented at the RMweb Live show by Simon Kohler, now working as a consultant to them, and with his kind permission was able to take a close up look at some of their new items either just released or in development.
Firstly the Drummond 700 this model was first announced at the end of last year is now also at the 2nd EP stage.

They have certainly captured the look the prototype and I am advise they hope to have these in the shops before Christmas.  The changes made to the originally announced number and livery versions that I reported here back in January, following my discussion with Hornby, has now been confirmed to all retailers. They will be producing E695 (Maunsell pre-1931 lined black) , 30315 (BR Late Crest) and 30693 (BR Early Crest).

The well documented supply chain difficulties experienced by Hornby over the last few years do actually appear to be finally resolved with a flow of new production appearing to arrive, including further batches of the 2 Bil and R3194 Hornby Schools Class 30937 ‘Epsom’.
Just starting to hit the shops now is the brand new R3260 2 HAL EMU looking very smart in SR olive green livery,  the first of a number of livery variants due, that like the Drummond 700 was first announced at the end of last year.

Simon also had on display and running the first production sets of the Hornby/Arnold 5 Bel Brighton Bell sets in the later blue and grey and livery and these should be available during October with the Brown and Umber versions to follow before the end of the year. I was very impressed by the models that also include lit table lamps that appears nice and subtle with now signs of any flicker. The unit running was also very smooth, although I did notice that one compromise that had to be retained was that the solebars do have a couple of cut outs to allow the bogies to swing, however the effect was not as obvious as I first through it would be from the initial EP’s seen.   As first announced here these models are  only  available via www.Hornby.com and orders can now be taken via their website here..

It’s good to see such positive progress on a number of the Southern related models over the last few weeks, and I am happy to say that some progress,  behind the scenes, of some of the other already announced models  has also been made (I have had Cads for checking from many sources recently) . Long may this continue and I will endeavour to continue to provide the latest updates on this blog along with any new Southern related announcements that may or may not already be in the pipeline (was that enough of a tease?)
